なんと、この私が、お医者さんが集まる国際学会で、プレゼン。2008年11月6日の第４９回日本母性衛生学会です。

Main symposium: "Safe Motherhood"

Safe Motherhood still remains an important theme in the world today. Of course, the issues concerned with Safe Motherhood are quite different in the developing countries compared to those in the more developed regions.

Safe Motherhood, however, is the theme common throughout the whole world. Noting the Millennium Development Goals set out by the United Nations, the reduction of infant and maternal mortality poses key issues among developing countries, while the crisis of obstetric care has become a topic for public concern in Japan.

How we can protect human beings from the threat of HIV/AIDS is another important issue. At this Meeting, representatives are invited from WHO (World Health Organization), UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund), IPPF (International Planned Parenthood Federation), the Government of Japan, and a Japanese Non-Profit Organization (NPO). Each representative introduces actions taken towards Safe Motherhood in each organization.

私は、子供を出産したとき、859グラムで誕生した超未熟児だった子供ともども、先進医療に命を助けられたという経験を持っています。

それまでにも、イメージ的には、承知していた、後進国の女性たち【その苦しさは、少女のときから始まるのですが】の生活ぶりの惨めさが、そのとき、はじめて、自分の心に突き刺さりました。

「支援する側に立つ」というのは、ずいぶん贅沢なことだと思います。また、正直、日々の生活や自分の生計を立てるのが優先で、今年などは、このシンポ以外は、「開店休業」状態です。

ただ、そんな中にも、定期的に、ご寄付を送って下さる方などがおいでになり、また、賛同してくださる仲間がいます。普段は、「自分で自分の面倒を見ないと、老後は誰にも頼れないですから」程度のことしか言っていない私ですが、「自分」の身の丈より大きく、自分の人生より意味のあるプロジェクトに参加できることに、感謝しています。

支援先の病院は、オーストラリアやイギリス、アメリカなど、各国の支援団体が活発に活動しており、いろいろな立場の方々から、教えをいただくことばかり。日本側は、英語ができない人が中心なのがなんとも歯がゆいことばかりで、もっと、日本という国が、開かれていかないものかな、と、こちらの非営利のほうでも思うことしきり。

この学会でも、普段はご挨拶しないような方々とのお食事やディスカッションをすることになりますが、産科フィスチュラという疾病に対する、医学関係者の方々の理解や支持を、得られる大きな機会を艇要していただいたことに対し、日本母性衛生学会に心より御礼を申し上げたいと思います。

支援先病院、アジスアベバフィスチュラ病院でのさまざまな情景。貧困女性に無料で治療を施す病院でありながら、ケアや施設は、先進国レベルに保たれ、清潔で美しい秩序だった運営は、国連機関であるＵＮＦＰＡの強い支持にもつながりました。
